SSL Certificate Questions Answered!

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is what secures data as it is transferred to and from your website in an encrypted format. Encryption is the process of scrambling data into an undecipherable format that can only be returned to a readable format with the proper decryption key.

Essentially, an SSL certificate serves as an electronic “passport” that establishes an online entity’s credentials when transmitting data. When one of your site visitors sends confidential information through your website, the visitor’s browser accesses the server’s digital certificate and establishes a secure connection.

What are the benefits of using an SSL certificate?

Lots of reasons! Aside from encrypting all information as it is exchanged from the server to the user’s device, having a secure site (complete with browser padlock and https://) lets your visitors know that you prioritize security and privacy. Even if you are not selling your products and services online, you are protecting their browsing privacy and any information they may submit over contact or subscription forms. Websites secured with an SSL certificate tend to be prioritized by the search engines – it’s become a necessity to compete with other websites.

How will people know my site is secure?

Regardless of the type of SSL certificate you use, the browser bar will display a padlock icon and the https:// prefix in the URL address. If you opt for a purchased EV Certificate, the address bar in their web browser will also be displayed in green.

Very importantly, the flip-side of this is also true – users are made aware of any sites that are NOT secure, potentially costing visitor trust and site usage. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! All of our clients are provided with an SSL certificate as part of our core package.

Do I need to pay extra for an SSL Certificate?

We provide a domain-validated SSL certificate as part of our core service packages. There are no setup fees and no separate costs.  SSL upgrade options are available as needed.

What are the differences in the SSL certificate upgrades?

There are a number of different types of SSL certificates, with the primary difference being the level of validation the certificate holder goes through, and how many domains and subdomains can be secured. Any of the certificates will display a padlock icon and https:// prefix in the browser’s URL address bar and offer the same level of encryption. The more extensive the validation, the longer it takes to issue the ticket – Domain Validated (DV) is usually instantaneous, Organization Validated (OV) takes a few days, and Extended Validated (EV) can take a week or more.

Our included SSL option is a Domain Validated (DV) solution that encrypts all inbound and outbound transmissions, including private and sensitive data. For an additional annual fee, we also offer Domain-Validated (DV – $80/yr), Organization-Validated (OV – $175/yr), and Extended-Validated (EV – $250/yr) Comodo/Sectigo SSL certificate options. Wildcard is available on DV ($350/yr) or OV ($450/yr) certificates, which secures the primary website domain name and an unlimited number of its subdomains. For example, if we used a Wildcard certificate on our website, we could secure our main domain name www.hyperquad.com, as well as any number of subdomains: domains.hyperquad.com, hosting.hyperquad.com, support.hyperquad.com.

Do I need to upgrade to one of the other SSL Certificate options?

Most of our clients do not, but this would depend on what extent you want your domain name validated and if you will need to secure multiple subdomains. It is often recommended that websites that have online direct sales/transactions upgrade to a higher level of validation, but this is not required to run a secure online environment.
